As a qualified Nutritional Therapist, Mary-Lou has a Science Foundation degree through the University of Bedfordshire, and a diploma through ION (Institute for Optimum Nutrition) and ITEC (International Therapists Examiners Council).
Her first Nutritional qualification was with our beloved founder of the Academy of Wellness, the late Stuart Warren Wilson who was her first ever nutrition lecturer at SACOCT (South African College of Complementary Therapies) and her original mentor and inspiration with her health studies, and her career path.
She has completed Dr Dicken Weatherby’s Comprehensive Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis course through the Blood Chemistry University. This and her latest 2 studies are all online eLearning courses, which positions her perfectly to support the Academy course.
Mary-Lou works with various laboratories in the UK and the US, and has attended several trainings, both on site and online, to enhance her knowledge and support her clients using Functional Diagnostic Tools and tests to assess body system and organ dysfunction or imbalances.
Laboratories that she works with include:
- Genova Diagnostics (GDX) UK
- Functional Diagnostics (FDx) UK
- Regenerus Laboratories (UK)
- Biolab (UK)
- Doctor’s Data (UK)
- Hakala (US – Thyroid Specialist Lab tests)
- Direct Labs (US)
Furthermore, she has completed various additional short courses and seminars, too numerous to mention all, but those that stand out as exceptional, are
- Dr Bruce Lipton (Epigenetics)
- Dr Joe Dispenza (Epigenetic Neuroscience and meditation skills)
- Hay House Annual World Tours (hosting a multitude of outstanding speakers and authors from around the globe e.g. Neal Donald Walsh and Cheryl Richardson)
She has attended seminars with the excellent late Dr Nicolas Gonzales on his outstanding Cancer Treatment strategies:

- Enzyme Therapy for Cancer,
- Metabolic Typing in Cancer Protocols,
- ‘‘Different Diets for Different Types’
Mary-Lou has worked with Professor Patrick Holford for many years, supporting him on his many Road Trips around the UK, launching his books and range of supplement products, including Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
As Biocare’s representative on the many years of travelling with Patrick Holford and his team on the Road trips, she has had extensive experience and training in a diverse and broad range of supplements.
A highlight in her career was to spend almost 2 years in a support role at Patrick Holford’s world renowned ‘Brain Bio Centre’ in the UK…both in the Clinic Office Management, as well as being a key support at the ‘Food for the Brain’ annual conferences. This has significantly enhanced Mary-Lou’s knowledge and practice with mental health issues ranging from clients with disorders on the Autistic Spectrum, from Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), to Asperger’s Syndrome, as well as the various Depressions, and the various Schizophrenias.
In fact so inspired was she by her experience at the Brain Bio Centre that she wrote her dissertation in her final year at ION, on mental health issues, titled ‘Is hydroxyhemopyrrolin (HPL) a reliable indicator of mental health problems, and does the supplementation of zinc and vitamin B6 suppress HPL excretion and improve associated neurobehavioural problems?’
A huge accomplishment when she studied at the Institute for Optimum Nutrition in the UK, was to create the platform for putting ION’s library onto their website as an Online library. This meant scan reading every single one of the hundreds of books in the library, and logging it on the system with a summary of each book, and relevant search term keywords!
Mary-Lou also spent the best part of 2 years running and supporting frequent seminars and the various highly respected international lecturers, and the delegates and students attending seminars for Nutri West UK. As a result she specialised in Endocrine Nutrition and Glandular Therapy, and expanded her knowledge and practice due to the exemplary training she received from the founder of the London College of Naturopathic Medicine, Dr Roderick Lane.
As the Senior Nutritionist on Europe’s leading military style weight loss and fitness boot camp (New You Boot Camp) she converted their ‘old style’ sports nutrition, to functional nutrition and Integrative Weight and Fitness Management Strategies, and lectured on functional physiology and functional nutrition around twice a month, for 9 years.
She has both lectured to, and consulted privately with small informal ‘family and friends ‘groups, larger groups of up to 80 people, community centers, primary schools, a Complimentary college, and school leavers over the past 20 odd years.
She is also a qualified Reconnective Healing Foundational Practitioner (Dr Eric Pearl), a Magnet Therapist, a Swedish Massage Therapist, and a Reflexologist. She has worked on both animals and humans with both local and non-local Distance Healing.
She practices energy psychology in the form of a Life Management Skills Talk-style therapy, which she has termed ‘Emotional Clearing’, combined with EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) principles, and other Epigenetic strategies.
For the past 2 years, Mary-Lou has been a student of the Practitioner Liberation Project (an outstanding online Health Business Coaching and Mentoring programme in the US) dedicated to supporting and training Integrative & Holistic Therapists and Practitioners to become, or incorporate, Online Healthcare Practitioners in their businesses.
This widely expands the practitioner’s’ client base, and trains the Practitioner in a broad range of modern day, effective online marketing tools and strategies, in order to become ‘visible’ to the ‘target clients’ chosen by the Practitioner.
Over the past year Mary-Lou has successfully converted 90% of her business into a successful and efficient Online Healthcare Practice.
This means that she is incredibly well placed and trained to support the module content as well as the students’ needs in terms of identifying their ‘niche market’ for Online Practices, as well as for her tutor and mentorship role at the Academy of Wellness.
Little known ‘Fun-facts’ about Mary-Lou is that she qualified as a Road Transport Manager with the Rand Afrikaans University (RAU) in her mid 20’s, which she is clear ‘set her up’ with her outstanding route planning and time scheduling skills in her Practice as a Travelling Therapist and Lecturer. She also did the Teachers’ Training Course at the Waldorf (Rudolph Steiner) school in South Africa, and took adult Zulu lessons – both to support her young step son in his schooling.
Mary-Lou says: “Through my diverse range of studies, and lecturing and consulting experience over the years, I have gathered a comprehensive range of ‘Integrative healing strings to my bow’ and I feel equipped to serve the Academy of Wellness Community of Students and Graduates in a holistic, diverse, supportive and knowledgeable way, both through intellectual content, as well as practical clinical, and lecturing experience.
Having successfully run my own ‘Travelling Health & Wellbeing Therapist’ and then ‘Global Online Health & Wellness Practitioner’ business over the years, and having created several innovative projects, my business sense, time management and organisational skills and financial acumen, have created the platform for a wealth of experience with which to serve the students and future ‘Integrative Health & Wellness Practitioners’ and the future Enhanced course ‘Functional Integrative Health & Wellness Practitioners’.
I am dedicated to supporting our students and graduates to achieving excellence and success in their studies, and subsequently in their own Clinical Practice.”
